  65.  1. Song must play in Cubic Player v1.6+, or Impulse Tracker v2.02+ for .IT
  66.     and contain no more than 32 channels
  67.  2. No remixes or remakes of other songs (even your own)
  68.  3. The only text allowed in the song file is your verified song title
  69.  4. Uncompressed entry size must not exceed 1,000,000 bytes
  70.  5. The song and zip-compressed file format must follow the specifications
  71.     provided in your entry verification
  72.  6. Entry must be in ftp.cdrom.com/incoming/MC4 before 00:00 GMT, 15 Jul 1996
  73.  7. A single version of one song may be entered
  74.  8. Entry may not be publicly released until final results are posted

  76.  _____Reasons for Disqualification

  78.  1. The entry or author violates any of the rules above
  79.  2. The author's name or handle appears anywhere in the song file
  80.  3. An entrant votes on his/her own song

  85.  The organizers of MC4 reserve the right to disqualify a song due to

  124.  Greetings.  The goal of this third newsletter is to prepare you for the
  125.  voting phase of the contest.  We have provided file information to help you
  126.  acquire the necessary player programs.  Pulse has written a brief guide for
  127.  Impulse Tracker relevant to its use as a judging tool.

  129.  Those of you who like waiting for the last minute can still register to
  130.  enter!  The entry form and registration tips are provided below.

  132.  Upload verifications are moving along.  Please be patient though.  We will
  133.  contact you only if there was a problem with your upload.  If you have not
  134.  uploaded your song yet, see the tips below on preparing your entry.

  144.  This is your last chance for MC4 entry registration!  We are extending the
  145.  deadline. Forms must be received no later than 00:00 GMT on 12 July 1996.
  146.  This is equivalent to 7:00pm EDT, 11 July 1996.

  148.  _____Registration Process
  149.  
  150.  There is no line for "entry division."  We do not need to know if you are
  151.  entering rookie or veteran at registration time.  The form verification
  152.  e-mail which will be sent to you explains how to enter your desired category.
  153.  
  154.  You must send your form from the e-mail address at which you can receive
  155.  e-mail.  Form verifications are sent to the sender of the form.  Several
  156.  form verifications have bounced.  If your verification does not arrive within
  157.  two days of sending your form, you need to send the form again.

  159.  When we process your entry form, we will assign to you a 4-character song-id
  160.  and e-mail it to you with upload instructions.  These instructions explain
  161.  how to name your files and where to upload them depending on which division
  162.  you wish to enter.

  196.  During upload verification, several common errors have been noticed.  These
  197.  errors result in an entry being deleted, its composer notified, and the
  198.  entry being re-uploaded.  Entrants should follow these tips to avoid the
  199.  extra work for both parties involved.

  203.  Modules entered in MC4 must have the song title included.  It can only appear
  204.  once; either in the song title field or in the first line of the sample text
  205.  area.  Capitalize only the first letter of important words in the title.
  206.  
  207.  Song titles must only contain normal ASCII characters.  Hyphens, brackets,
  208.  and other punctuation is not allowed.

  237.  This article contains important information about using Impulse Tracker for
  238.  MC4.  Please read it and feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
  239.  
  240.  _____MC4 Version of Impulse Tracker
  241.  
  242.  First of all, I'd like to make it known that there will be a special version
  243.  of Impulse Tracker for MC4.  This version will be essentially the same as the
  244.  previous versions of Impulse Tracker, but with a completely re-written sound
  245.  engine.  If you had troubles with the tracker in the past, please contact me
  246.  so I can fix up as many problems as possible before MC4.
  247.  
  248.  _____Channel Limits
  249.  
  250.  The MC4 version of Impulse Tracker will have a 32 channel limit enforced by
  251.  each soundcard driver.  If you are using IT to write your MC4 entry and the
  252.  song uses more than 32 virtual channels, test the song using the command line
  253.  IT /L32.  In most cases, the playback shouldn't be greatly affected by the
  254.  /L32 parameter, although it doesn't hurt to make sure.  :)
  255.  
  256.  _____Playback Quality
  257.  
  258.  Several people have expressed concern about the playback quality on Gravis
  259.  UltraSound cards, due to the fact that using greater than 14 channels will
  260.  lower the of playback rate.
  261.  
  262.  I have recently finished a "high quality" UltraSound output driver that
  263.  continuously re-initializes the UltraSound to use as few channels as possible
  264.  (and it doesn't click!).  If you would like to test this driver, write to me.
  265.  
  266.  For those of you with only 512k of RAM on your UltraSound, there is automatic
  267.  sample compression in IT.  It's not selective however, and hence not as good
  268.  as Cubic Player.  :(  I hope to finish a mixed GUS driver before the MC4
  269.  deadline, although I'm not sure whether I'll be able to.
  270.  
  271.  _____Interpolation
  272.  
  273.  The MC4 version of Impulse Tracker will feature interpolation on mixed cards.
  274.  Due to the fact that IT is a tracker and not a player, it is necessary that I
  275.  do not modify samples in any way.  This leads to the problem of clicking in
  276.  some cases at the ends of loops.
  277.  
  278.  Impulse Tracker doesn't modify the samples if you cut your samples to their
  279.  loop ends.  I recommend that you all use Alt-L on your samples.
  280.  
  281.  Several people have noticed the sample-flipping problem in IT.  This has been
  282.  linked to the Clear Sample Name command!  It has since been fixed, but I
  283.  should warn you to try reloading your songs before submitting them.  :)
