Greetings. The goal of this third newsletter is to prepare you for the
voting phase of the contest. We have provided file information to help you
acquire the necessary player programs. Pulse has written a brief guide for
Impulse Tracker relevant to its use as a judging tool.
Those of you who like waiting for the last minute can still register to
enter! The entry form and registration tips are provided below.
Upload verifications are moving along. Please be patient though. We will
contact you only if there was a problem with your upload. If you have not
uploaded your song yet, see the tips below on preparing your entry.

:: "Last Chance for Entry Registration"
:: GD / Hornet
:: gd@ftp.cdrom.com
_____Introduction
This is your last chance for MC4 entry registration! We are extending the
deadline. Forms must be received no later than 00:00 GMT on 12 July 1996.
This is equivalent to 7:00pm EDT, 11 July 1996.
_____Registration Process
There is no line for "entry division." We do not need to know if you are
entering rookie or veteran at registration time. The form verification
e-mail which will be sent to you explains how to enter your desired category.
You must send your form from the e-mail address at which you can receive
e-mail. Form verifications are sent to the sender of the form. Several
form verifications have bounced. If your verification does not arrive within
two days of sending your form, you need to send the form again.
When we process your entry form, we will assign to you a 4-character song-id
and e-mail it to you with upload instructions. These instructions explain
how to name your files and where to upload them depending on which division
you wish to enter.
_____Entry Registration Form
You must cut this form out of the newsletter using a text editor. Fill it
out and send it to gd@ftp.cdrom.com right now!

_____Introduction
During upload verification, several common errors have been noticed. These
errors result in an entry being deleted, its composer notified, and the
entry being re-uploaded. Entrants should follow these tips to avoid the
extra work for both parties involved.
_____Song Title
Modules entered in MC4 must have the song title included. It can only appear
once; either in the song title field or in the first line of the sample text
area. Capitalize only the first letter of important words in the title.
Song titles must only contain normal ASCII characters. Hyphens, brackets,
and other punctuation is not allowed.
WRONG: ..--==[[TaSTy GRaVy]]==--..
Right: Tasty Gravy
WRONG: pretty.girl!pretty.girl!pretty.girl!
Right: Pretty Girl
WRONG: jaaaa! it'z "Coooooooooool stuffffffff" !@!@@@@
Right: Cool Stuff
_____Sample Text
Entries may not contain any text besides the song title. All instrument
names must be removed. Entrants of Impulse Tracker modules (.IT) may not
write anything in the song message (shift-F9) area.
_____Conclusion
Avoid the extra work and double check your entry before uploading.

:: Impulse Tracker for MC4
:: Pulse
:: pulse@smug.student.adelaide.edu.au
_____Introduction
This article contains important information about using Impulse Tracker for
MC4. Please read it and feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
_____MC4 Version of Impulse Tracker
First of all, I'd like to make it known that there will be a special version
of Impulse Tracker for MC4. This version will be essentially the same as the
previous versions of Impulse Tracker, but with a completely re-written sound
engine. If you had troubles with the tracker in the past, please contact me
so I can fix up as many problems as possible before MC4.
_____Channel Limits
The MC4 version of Impulse Tracker will have a 32 channel limit enforced by
each soundcard driver. If you are using IT to write your MC4 entry and the
song uses more than 32 virtual channels, test the song using the command line
IT /L32. In most cases, the playback shouldn't be greatly affected by the
/L32 parameter, although it doesn't hurt to make sure. :)
_____Playback Quality
Several people have expressed concern about the playback quality on Gravis
UltraSound cards, due to the fact that using greater than 14 channels will
lower the of playback rate.
I have recently finished a "high quality" UltraSound output driver that
continuously re-initializes the UltraSound to use as few channels as possible
(and it doesn't click!). If you would like to test this driver, write to me.
For those of you with only 512k of RAM on your UltraSound, there is automatic
sample compression in IT. It's not selective however, and hence not as good
as Cubic Player. :( I hope to finish a mixed GUS driver before the MC4
deadline, although I'm not sure whether I'll be able to.
_____Interpolation
The MC4 version of Impulse Tracker will feature interpolation on mixed cards.
Due to the fact that IT is a tracker and not a player, it is necessary that I
do not modify samples in any way. This leads to the problem of clicking in
some cases at the ends of loops.
Impulse Tracker doesn't modify the samples if you cut your samples to their
loop ends. I recommend that you all use Alt-L on your samples.
Several people have noticed the sample-flipping problem in IT. This has been
linked to the Clear Sample Name command! It has since been fixed, but I
should warn you to try reloading your songs before submitting them. :)
_____Conclusion
Watch for the MC4 version of Impulse Tracker coming soon!
